The Ballard Memorial golf team participated in a couple of tournaments this week as they work toward the All A Tournament on Friday.

The Bombers hit the links on Tuesday, August 6th at Union County Tournament where they placed sixth out of the ten teams competing.  The team competed without their number two seeded player TJ Wray who was unable to attend the match.  The Bombers number one seed Steven McGowan shot a 79 to lead the Bombers.  That score was tied for the 12th best score on the day.  The number two through four seeds for the Bombers were in a cluster on their scores on the day.  Austin Dowdy finished the day with an 89, Trent Taylor shot a 90, and Matt Miller concluded the day with a 91.  That was a team score 349 on the day.  Hopkinsville won the tournament with a team score 311 and Owensboro Catholic’s John Augenstein won medalist honors with a 69.

The Bombers then returned to more familiar ground as they attended the Paducah Invitational on Saturday, August 10th at Paxton Park.  The Bombers did not fare as well as they would have liked as they finished with a 355 team score leaving them last in the 13 team field, one stroke behind Calloway County.  Ballard Memorial did not have any individual place in the top 25.  McGowan again led the way with an 80 while Wray came in with an 88, Dowdy shot a 92 and Miller finished with 95.  Lance Davis won medalist honors with a two under par 69 to help lead Graves County to the team title as well with a team score of 301.

Eighth grader Meghan Walker competed in her first ever varsity golf match and came away with some much needed experience at the Paducah Invitational.  Since she is the only female golfer on the team, Ballard Memorial did not accumulate a team score in the competition.

The Bombers host their first match of the year at the Ballard County Country Club on Monday, August 12thagainst rival St. Mary.  This will be the team’s final tune up before Friday’s All A Tournament at Silo Country Club.  The top team will advance to Somerset along with the top two individual players who are not on the team that qualifies for state.  Ballard Memorial graduate Drew Myers advanced last year as an individual as the Bombers look to send another individual or team to the state All A on September 7th.
