Bill Solmon, formerly of Ballard County and most recently of Mt. Carmel, IL passed away January 4th. He was a retired carpenter. He is survived by two daughters of Makanda, Illinois and Harker Heights, Texas., and four grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Red and Eloise Solmon, of La Center. There will be no services.

J.R. Malone, 96, of Lovelaceville died at 9:17 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2014, at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis, Ill. Arrangements were incomplete at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.

Helen Louise Houseright, 88, of Ypsilanti, Mich., formerly of Metropolis, died Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Gilbert Residence in Ypsilanti. Arrangements were incomplete at Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis.

Mrs. Bernice (Jeffords) Jones, age 76, of Brookport, IL., passed away at 11:39 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Baptist Health Paducah. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at the Brookport Church of God with Rev. Charles Tate and Rev. Doug Bowers Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Otterbein Cemetery in Pope County, IL. Bernice was a member of the Brookport Church of God where she was a member of the Hilltoppers. Bernice is survived by 3 daughters, Cathy Hale and husband Nelson of Union City, TN., Linn Welch and husband Steve of Brookport, and Carrie Edwards and special friend Meagan Tidwell of Brookport; 2 sons, David Brannum and wife Debbie of Brookport, and Aubrey Edwards and wife Jennie of Cypress, IL.; 8 grandchildren, Victoria Long of Marion, KY., Kagan Brannum of Dover, DE., Cody Dresser of Metropolis, Taylor Brannum of Brookport, Jenna Edwards and Haley Edwards of Cypress, IL., and Dylan Curtis and Destiny Curtis of Brookport; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Melvin Jeffords and wife Nadine, Aubrey Jeffords and wife Linda, and Alan Jeffords and wife Cindy, all of New Liberty, IL.; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Maudie (Owens) Jeffords; and her husband, Rev. James P. Johnston, 69, of Metropolis passed away at 11:35 A.M. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Crittenden Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery # 10 in New Columbia. He is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Littlemeyer of Metropolis, Nancy Reed and husband Randy of Paducah, KY.; as well as two brothers, John Johnston and wife Terri of Metropolis, and Robert Johnston and wife Shelly of Aiken, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James P. Johnston Sr. and Margaret Lillian (Michelich) Johnston.

Bernice (Jeffords) Jones, 76, of Brookport died at 11:39 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Baptist Health Paducah. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Brookport Church of God with the Revs. Charles Tate and Doug Bowers Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Otterbein Cemetery in Pope County. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at the church. Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Dustin Alan Burnham, 28, of Metropolis died Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home with the Rev. Eric Neil Potts, age 42, of Barlow passed away at 5:47 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at Lourdes hospital in Paducah. Mr. Potts was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in La Center. He was a retired maintenance foreman for the TVA Shawnee Steam Plant. He was a member of the Boilermakers Local No. 40 and the Knight of Columbus No. 1055. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Tammy (Timmons) Potts of Barlow; daughter, Shelby Potts of Barlow; son, Steven Potts of Barlow; parents, Ray and Sue (Ellegood) Potts of Fancy Farm; daughter-in-law, Kerstie (Crabtree) Potts of La Center; sister, Susan Potts of Fancy Farm; maternal grandmother, Onieta Hayden Ellegood of Fancy Farm; grandchildren, Tristan Dukes, Camdon Potts, Eden Dukes, Jada Potts, Emmett Potts and Gabriel Caldwell. He was preceded in death by his son, Neil Potts; maternal grandfather, Samuel Ellegood; paternal grandparents, Willie D. and Frances Potts. A Funeral Mass for Eric Neil Potts was held on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the St. Mary Catholic Church in La Center with Fr. Brandon Williams, Fr. J. Patrick Reynolds and Fr. David Willett officiating. Burial followed in the St. Mary Catholic Church Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to: St. Mary Catholic Church Food Bank, P.O. Fary (Bobby) Heflin, 82, died at 9:24 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Life Care Center in La Center. She and her husband farmed for many years. She is survived by several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Heflin. Her parents were Rob and Fary Jones. Services were held Friday, January 3, 2014, at Morrow Funeral Chapel with Bob Morrow officiating. Burial followed at Mt. James Edward Long, 93, of Kevil, Ky., passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013, at 8:15 a.m. at New Haven Assisted Living Home in Kevil, Ky. He is now gone to be with his beloved wife, Earlene Hayden Long, in heaven. He has missed her for the last 20 years. For many years he raised cattle. He finally stopped at the age of 82. But he still loved to go to the cattle sales as long as his health let him. Some of his favorite things to do were to visit with friends in person or by phone. He loved reading the newspaper or magazines and watch TV. He was a member of New Liberty Methodist Church, and a part of the family at New Haven Assisted Living at Kevil, Ky. He is survived by three nephews, Gene (Carla) Gough of Kevil, Lynn (Sally) Gough of Bowling Green, Ky., and Gary Long of Metropolis, Ill.; two nieces, Pat (Lee) Malloy of Houston, Texas, and Mary (Jimmy) Bumpous of La Center, Ky., and one dear friend, Kenneth Wray of Kevil, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Willie (Rudd) Long; his beloved wife, Earlene (Hayden) Long; two brothers, Asa Long and Morris Long; one sister, Mary Geneva Gough; and two nephews, Charles Gough and Randy Long. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 3, 2014, at Lindsey Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Stacy officiating. Burial followed at Maplelawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tracey Sullivan, Bill Warford, Jordan Gough, Tyler Gough, Terry Thompson, and Gary Hammonds. Honorary pallbearers will be Norman Ellis, Kenneth Wray, Billie Jean Hook and Bob Wilson. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you make donations to the Lourdes Hospice organization or the building fund for New Liberty Methodist Church at Kevil, Ky. Lindsey Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
