Afraid of Flying? by J.T. Parish
Afraid of Flying?
It was on our high school senior trip that I accepted the dare to get in a plane - with a stunt pilot. I don't recommend it. I was ready to kiss the ground when we landed. A few years later I took my first commercial flight from Evansville Indiana, to Marquette, Michigan. We landed in Detroit and was shuttled over to Ypsilanti to board a North Central plane for the last leg of our journey. North Central was using World War 2 vintage planes in those days. They advertised that they had never had a fatality. They came very close to having their first on the day - Me - from heart failure!
We took off and before reaching our flying altitude, we were told we had engine problems and had to go back and make an emergency landing. I was on my way to Marquette to preach a two week revival. We had a great meeting. They had a prayed up Evangelist! Emergency landing cause some of the best prayer meetings you have ever attended!
My first flight with a stunt pilot, my second flight had an emergency landing, so my third flight didn't ovvur for a few more years. Later I served 12 years on the Board of an International Fellowship of churches with four meetings a year and got used to flying. In fact, I came to realize that the most dangerous part of flying was driving to the airport.
I told this story to a man who said, "You weren't afraid of flying. You were afraid of dying." I believe he was right. The fear of death is the ultimate fear. Victory over the fear of death delivers us from all other fears. The Book of Hebrews tells us Jesus gives us that deliverance. "For as much then as they children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." ( Hebrews 2:14-15 )
There is a plane of confidence and repose in the finished work of Jesus that fills our hearts with the love that casts out all fear. We don't have to be afraid of flying of dying!
