Annual Summer Dance for Homeschool Students
On Thursday, August 21st, over 100 homeschool students ages 11-20 turned up in the front yard of Ralph and Debbie Hendrix for the annual Summer Dance near Joy, KY. Participants came from as far away as Dresden TN and Golconda IL including over eight west Kentucky counties. The Summer Dance is part of the tri-state area homeschool group's series of seasonal dances including a Winter Formal, Spring, Summer and Fall dances. This is the second year the Hendrixes have hosted a dance at their home in Livingston County. The Hendrix' daughter, Emily Hendrix, age 17, has been participating in ballroom dancing for over four years. She was the chief architect of the event. When asked what she gets out of hosting and instructing this kind of social gathering, Hendrix replied, "I get the satisfaction of helping a dying art-form stay alive, plus a good workout!"
The Summer Dance consisted of food, fun, fellowship and lots of good music. Hendrix teaches a variety of dances which include Latin, Russian, Regency and ballroom dances. Hendrix has developed a lengthy music playlist over time. "Several of us who have been doing these dances since 2010 have a list of our favorite dance songs on our iPods or computers. That way, anytime we are together, we're ready to dance at a moment's notice!" Hendrix added.
This year's dance had a tropical theme and showcased the Hendrix's front lawn encircled with white lights hung from 14 foot poles. Participants enjoyed dancing barefoot in the grass. "It was a lot of fun," says Caleb Graham, a 12-year-old from Crittenden County. "It's very active and good exercise. I hope it happens again!" he added. Kelsey Scarbrough, 18, traveled with her family from Dresden TN to attend the dance at Hendrix's home. Kelsey states, "No matter what she's doing, Emily gives it her all, and the Summer Dance was no exception. She has so much fun dancing and is full of dance knowledge that she is willing to patiently share! It was a wonderful time."
