La Center – One of the guest speakers at the Ballard County Chamber Breakfast this month was Jane Cooper; who is a representative of the Ballard County Homemakers located in the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Office. Cooper started her presentation by giving a little background information about her. Cooper and her husband own one of the two dairy farms left in Ballard County and she taught in the Ballard County School District for ten years.
Cooper’s main topic of discussion was the up and coming 100th anniversary of the Ballard County Extension Office. This event will take place in May 2014. The Extension Offices are located throughout the counties in the United States and came about by the Morrill Act 1862 (MA) under the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln. According to Cooper, the Extension Offices, a part of the federal education system, were designed to develop and improve the knowledge of the citizens in the counties through home economics, agriculture, and rural energy. As a result of the MA, the Homemakers were established. Cooper said of the Homemakers, “We learn, we lead, we serve.”
Manager of External Education Business Sector Jessica Toren of the Workforce Solutions (WS) gave her presentation next. Toren informed the attendees that WS is located in the Emerging Technology Center on the campus of West Kentucky Community and Technical College.
