With a good sign heading into the final weeks of the 2013 golf season, the Ballard Memorial golf team shot their best team score of the year in the home season finale against Christian Fellowship. After scoring a lackluster 180 the week before against Mayfield, the Bombers turned the corner, as they shot a team best 158 on Monday at the Ballard County Country Club.
Junior Steven McGowan continues to anchor the young Bomber squad as he shot a one under par 35 to take medalist honors on the day. McGowan said he hit every fairway and made the green in regulation on all nine holes during the match. Freshman Mason Allen made the most of his opportunity. He played the number five seed in the match due to regular number three seed Austin Dowdy not playing because of tendonitis in his wrist. Allen shot a career best competition score of 40 for second low score on the day. Trent Taylor had a solid round as he finished with a 41 including a 30 foot chip in on number seven. TJ Wray finished with a 42 to complete the 158 score. The Bombers finished well ahead of Christian Fellowship who completed the day with a 232.
In girl’s competition, both teams had one player compete. Ballard Memorial’s Meghan Walker and CFS’s Campbell Knoth both finished with a 52 on the day.
The Bomber golf team was treated to a meal by Ballard County Country Club’s Barry, Cheryl, and Bryce Faulkner following the teams’ final home match of the year. Head Coach Stephen Queen then presented all nine golfers with a certificate for their participation this year. Coach Queen said awards will be handed out at the conclusion of the season, as he stated, “We are not done playing yet.” The Bombers finish their regular season with a regional tournament tune up on Tuesday, September 24th. The Bombers travel to the Mayfield-Graves County Country Club, site of the regional tournament, and compete against the Mayfield Cardinals. The girl’s regional tournament will be held on Monday, September 30th while boy’s competition will be held on Tuesday, October 1st.
