on her bicycle

Teri Moore is an artist, an adventurer, a scholar, a mother and a friend. She doesn’t meet a stranger, nor is she afraid of where life will take her as she is at the wheel. Miss Moore was the art teacher at the Ballard County Middle school for the past 2 years, training young minds and introducing them to themselves through art. This summer, she took a trip.
An adventure. Challenging not only her mind but her body to an 850 mile/26 day bicycle ride to Iowa by way of Wisconsin. (long story). On the way she encountered many questions from people, one of which surprised her, “aren’t you afraid to go all that way by yourself?” To that she replied that “there are more nice people out there than people realize.
If I broke down, someone would go out of their way to give me a lift. When I camped along the way, other campers offered to share their meals with me.” Teri planned this trip last summer, but didn’t make it very far so she was determined to complete the task this year, oh yeah, I forgot to mention that she is also very determined. She rode the first 30 miles of this trip with a fellow biking enthusiast who calls himself the “mildly amusing Ralphie” (another long story).
Beginning her trip in front of Café Etc. in lower town Paducah where I was fortunate enough to be there to wish her well, she hugged her daughter and other well-wishers, tied “Pokie” onto the back of her seat and took off. Luckily, once into Illinois, there were many bike trails to ride. She tackled the next 147 miles alone, meeting up with fellow Ragbrai teammate Jeff of “Team Gumby.”
(Ahh, this explained Pokey dangling on the back of the bicycle seat.) They rode another 300 miles on to Madison, Wisconsin. They traveled the Jane Adams bike trail and the Hennipen canal on to Rockford and crossed the Mississippi river in Savannah, IL, staying at a state park to meet up with the rest of Team Gumby. The Ragbrai is a 10 day ride across the state of Iowa where thousands show up to ride all day and camp out each night along the way. Since the recent flooding in Iowa, all of the hotels were full and even the campgrounds had become small refugee camps.
Teri met many flood refugees, not only entire families living in tents, but entire neighborhoods. Over 25,000 people have been displaced, and most of them unable to go back to their homes, for health reasons, to retrieve any possessions that might have been salvaged. “These people had just lost everything, and yet they were willing to share their meals with me.” One of the refugees at the camps said she was a big fan of “paying it forward” and would offer to do everyone’s laundry while they were staying there. Even though Teri was traveling light, a couple of saddle bags and a small bike wagon trailing behind, she carried her art case and ended up documenting her journey on along the way.
And there is no rationale for “living in fear of what we don’t understand.” While on the trip, she got a call from the Yeiser art gallery to become the new director, so now you can find her not only teaching art classes at WKCTC, but working at the museum, living the dream, her dream. Miss Moore has her artwork on display in several galleries around Illinois and Missouri. Some of which can be seen on her website: www.myartspace.com search for Teri Moore. |
School buses are out now, be alert

It's back to school time for hundreds of thousands of students, parents, educators and school staff. The Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet and the Office of Highway Safety remind drivers to be alert, use extreme caution and "drive smart!"
Each year in the United States, about 450,000 public school buses travel 4.3 billion miles to transport 23.5 million children to and from school and school-related activities. In 2007, there were 1,244 collisions either directly or indirectly involving a school bus in Kentucky, resulting in 410 injuries and three fatalities.
Here are some safety tips to keep in mind as school buses begin to roll:
• Allow enough time to get to school or to work. Leave earlier to avoid speeding.
• Obey all of the signs in the school zone. Flashing yellow lights are used to indicate school speed zones, in which fines can be doubled.
• Pay extra attention at crosswalks to make sure that no students are crossing.
• Watch for school bus stops. Red flashing lights and the extended "STOP" arm signal other motorists to come to a complete stop. On a highway with a divided median, motorists approaching a school bus stopped on the same side of the road on which they are traveling must stop. Motorists traveling in the opposite direction of the bus, on a divided highway, should not stop. Motorists are reminded to be extra cautious at bus stops. Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops.
• Make sure children are in safety seats or restrained properly on the way to school.
• Watch for children walking in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks.
