Former Owner reopens Levee Restaurant

By Pat Thomann, Editor

In early summer, Smiley's Levee Restaurant closed its doors for an undetermined amount of time due to health issues. When former owner, HB Smith heard about this he knew something had to be done.

Smith contacted the Smiley's and was told that they were not sure when the restaurant could reopen. Smith immediately began negotiations with the Smiley's and repurchased the restaurant from them. Smith said, "It was not good for the restaurant to be closed. Families and workers need a place they can come and sit down and enjoy a good meal."

HB and his wife of 42 years, Ann had owned the restaurant since 1988 but had always leased it out. The Smith's daughter bought the restaurant from her father and later sold it to the Smiley's. The Smiths, who have four employees, reopen the restaurant in June 2014.

While the Smiley's were owners, city voters passed an ordinance allowing alcohol by the drink to be served in the city, however; the Smiths have chosen not to serve alcohol.

HB is a lifelong resident of Livingston County, born to Frank and Willie Smith of Tiline. He graduated from Livingston Central High School. Ann was originally from Eastern Kentucky but has lived in Livingston County most of her life. The couple have four children, seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Great grandson, Bailey Mayhew is on the baseball team and great grandson Stevie Mayhew is on the basketball team. Most of the Smith family still lives in Livingston County.

At present, Joy Ramage manages the restaurant which features areas for smokers and nonsmokers. The restaurant seats approximately 90 people and is open Monday through Thursday from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Friday from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM serving fish and steaks after 4:00 PM. The restaurant is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to all your favorite sandwiches the restaurant serves plate lunches Monday through Friday and can accommodate groups or private parties during regular business hours. Stop in and enjoying a great breakfast or lunch or call ahead at 270-928-4552 to have your order ready for pick up.
