Grand Rivers Annual Chamber dinner

On Tuesday, January 21st the Grand Rivers Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Chamber dinner in the Grand Rivers Community/Senior Center. Chamber President Bill Gary IV opened with the invocation and dinner.

After a delicious meal Chamber President Gary welcomed Chamber members and guests and read announcements. He then introduced the Guest Speaker Bill Minihan from Badgett Theater.

Bill had just returned from a trip to the impoverished areas of Guatemala where he and his team had finished the final two classrooms on the local school they have been working on for about 3 years.

Bill described the living conditions there and explained how he got involved in the project. A total of eight classrooms have been built with over $40,000 that was donated by the patrons of the Badgett Theater. Bill said, “I have learned that if you present a specific need, the money will come in.” Through the Theater, Bill presented the need to those who came to see the performances and the money started to add up. Every dime donated to this project goes directly to the building, none is spent for overhead. That is taken care of through a specific donor.

In the beginning of the project Bill learned of the need for mattresses for the students because during the school year they stay at the school full time. The distance some students travel prevent them from returning home each day. Bill mentioned in an email to Pastor Mark Gill that there was a need and Pastor Gill put out the word. In just a short time he told Bill that mattresses for 90 students had been donated.

While traveling back to the airport for the trip home Bill and his team passed a village that had been totally destroyed during a storm in 2010. The people of the village are still living in tents and have very little. Bill said if God is willing he will return to work in that area.

The Theater will open its 2014 season in February and they will again be accepting donations for this new project. You can check out their website at www.grandriversvariety.com for show schedules and times and how you can donate.
