Javanne Wentworth Wants To “Finish The Fight” On Cancer

“Finish the Fight” is this year’s theme for Relay for Life and that is just what Javanne Wentworth’s goal was when she first became involved with Carlisle County Relay for Life when it began in 1998. Her battle against this disease is very personal, beginning with her father’s death in 1988 from pancreatic cancer that had spread throughout his body before it was discovered. The previous year, she had an aunt, her dad’s sister, who died from brain cancer. Since her fathers’ death she has had another uncle who died from lung cancer and an aunt from breast cancer and just this past year her grandmother passed away with cancer of the mouth. She currently has an aunt who has had throat cancer and is now fighting ovarian cancer. Javanne has had her own personal battle with cancer, being diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2009 and suffering through three surgeries. She now undergoes scans every six months to keep an eye out for any possible reoccurrence.

Javanne began her involvement with Relay in 1998 as a Team Captain for two years for the Flegle’s team, where she was employed at the time. After she started work at Citizens Deposit Bank, she joined their team and after a couple of years, became the team captain. Later she assumed the role of Activities Chair for the steering committee and served in that role for three years. After that she assumed the role of Co-Chair for two years and then agreed to serve as Chair, where she remained for 5 years. She is currently serving as Survivor Chair and is still a member of the team at Citizens Deposit Bank. She also recruited her mother, sister, niece and nephew to work with Relay and 3 of the four are still involved. “I feel very blessed and lucky to have the volunteer opportunities that Relay for Life has given me”, says Javanne.

When asked what she would like to would like to say to others about her family’s battle with cancer, she replied “I want everyone to realize the importance of early screenings. My cancer was caught early which greatly increased my chances of winning the battle. I still have scans every 6 months to make sure I’m still cancer free”.

Javanne also encourages others to become involved with the local Relay efforts and especially wants to invite everyone who has never been to a Relay for Life ceremony to attend this year on May 30-31 at the Carlisle County Park. “If you are a cancer survivor or know anyone who is a cancer survivor, please contact me at (270) 339-5332” says Javanne.   “We want to make sure you are involved in the Survivor Ceremony”.
