Kentucky awards contract to expand Asian carp market

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The state of Kentucky has awarded a contract for the establishment of a fish house to expand the market for an invasive species, Asian carp.

Gov. Matt Bevin's office said in a news release Tuesday that Kentucky Fish Center LLC of Wickliffe owned by Angie Yu won the contract. Asian carp caught in the state will be sold in daily auctions overseen by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

The agency has pledged up to $4 million in loans and incentives for the fish house and commercial fishermen. Commercial anglers will be paid an incentive of 5 cents per pound, supplementing the fish house's guaranteed 14 cents per pound purchase price.

Asian carp have spread and have established significant populations in Kentucky and Barkley lakes.
