Kight, Golf Complex help to improve player performance

By Jason Travis

KPI Staff Writer

Like most golf enthusiasts, Barry Kight enjoyed playing golf at a young age. For the last 14 years, the Paducah native has co-owned The Golf Complex in Paducah with Todd Trimble.

A Murray State University graduate with a business degree, last week Kight joined 62 other individuals from around the country to fly to California and participate in Callaway Golf's Master Staff program. Described as the best of the best at Callaway, Kight went through the program and became a Mastered Certified Club Fitter, participating in their tour and fitting departments and earning Callaway Golf's certified distinction.

"It brought a whole new light to certain aspects that they do on the fitting process and how to integrate it into our system," Kight said about the experience.

Although he usually helps with fittings, Kight also offers instruction at The Golf Complex. Together with Trimble, Nathan Wolfe and Nick Mills, the business has four Class A PGA professionals on staff as instructors. The Golf Complex can help local golfers with their golfing techniques on local courses.

"Every teacher we have here has a video system we use," Kight said. "We have a Doppler radar tracking system we use. All of that makes the lessons easier and easier to understand."

He said the hardest aspect for some golfers is changing incorrect techniques they are accustomed to.

"It's a new feeling. Sometimes those feelings are really hard to transpose into a golf swing. That's where our video systems that we use really helps," he said. "It speeds up the learning process. It's changing what they are use to doing and use to feeling."

Proper club fitting is also important for golfers and can make all the difference in performance.

"You can make a perfect golf swing with a club that's not right for you and the ball is going to go in the wrong direction. Plain and simple," he said.

"Some people think, 'Hey I'm not a very good player so it's not important.' It's actually more important for the average golfer than it is for the tour player, the professional golfer.

"The right shaft, the right shaft length, to even the right type of club head, it makes a big difference in making somebody enjoy the game more."
