Lady Bombers Reach Double Figure Wins
By Tim Taylor
At the beginning of the year, the Lady Bombers knew it would be a learning experience for them this season. With the team only dressing two upperclassmen, and starting one senior, one sophomore and three freshman, reaching ten victories in a season looked like a pretty lofty goal. Heading into the week, the Lady Bombers were only two victories shy of reaching double figure wins. On Tuesday night, the Lady Bombers hosted the Lady Falcons of Hickman County. Ballard Memorial opened the game with a 7-2 lead. A no look pass from Kenzie Blackford to Meghan Walker led to another basket just before the end of the first quarter, allowing the Lady Bombers to stretch the lead to 16-5. The Lady Bombers pushed the lead to 29-8 in the second quarter on a Kayto Buchanon field goal. However, the Lady Falcons scored the next seven that left the Lady Bombers up 29-15 at the halftime break.
Ballard Memorial's full court pressure paid dividends in the second half as they extended the lead. Opening the half outscoring Hickman County 12-4, the Lady Bombers put the game away as they led 51-29 after three quarters of play. Blackford started the fourth with a trey as the Lady Bombers scored the first nine points of the quarter to push the lead to 60-29. Ballard Memorial cruised to their ninth win of the season 64-42. "It's going to take all of us to get back to winning games and playing well," said Lady Bomber Head Coach Kayla Vance. Leah Shelley led four Lady Bombers in double figure scoring as she finished with 17 points and grabbing five rebounds. Fellow freshman Blackford had another solid night from the point guard position scoring 15 points while adding seven assist and six steals. Senior Ashleigh Tyson scored 11 points and Erin Young had a double-double with ten points to go along with ten steals. Jayde Newton scored three points and had seven boards while Walker, Buchanon, De'Naja Robinson, and Ree Fields all scored two points.
The Lady Bombers then hosted the Lady Pilots on Thursday night, January 29th. Ballard Memorial dropped a one point decision to Fulton County two weeks earlier. The Lady Bombers jumped out to the 15-8 lead after one quarter of play and they extended the lead to 18-11 with about six minutes remaining in the first half. Shelley's bucket with about four minutes remaining in the half kept the Lady Bombers up 20-13. However, the Lady Bombers did not score the remainder of the half and the Lady Pilots capitalized. Fulton County scored the last eight points of the half to take the 21-20 lead into the locker room. Coach Vance's halftime speech must have been inspiring as the Lady Bombers came out and took control in the second half. Blackford and Newton finished with seven combined treys in the game as the Lady Bombers regained the lead and ran away from the Lady Pilots. Ballard Memorial outscored Fulton County 35-18 in the half as the Lady Bombers shot down the Lady Pilots 55-39 to capture their tenth win of the season. Blackford led the team in scoring as she hit two treys and scored 18 points in the game. Newton hit five of eight three point attempts for 15 points. Shelley finished just shy of a double-double as she concluded the night with eight points and ten rebounds. Walker and Young both scored seven each in the wining effort. The Lady Bombers stand at 10-13 on the year and will finish up district play in the next seven days. Ballard Memorial will host their district foe Lady Cardinals of Mayfield on Homecoming Night Friday, February 6th. They play another Lady Cardinal team on Saturday as they travel to Livingston Central before returning home to conclude district play, hosting Graves County on Tuesday, February 10th. Coach Vance concluded saying, "We're going to take it each week at a time and look to making regionals."
