Lady Bombers Working Hard

The youthful Ballard Memorial Lady Bomber softball team is working hard against tough competition to start the season. The Lady Bombers hosted one of the best Class A schools in the state of Illinois in Massac County. The Lady Patriots advanced deep into state tournament last year and are still strong this season. A few mistakes here and there allowed the Lady Patriots some additional chances, and Massac took advantage of those miscues in the 11-0 win at Ballard Memorial on a wet and chilly night on Thursday, March 27th.

A two run homer in the first inning put Massac up 2-0. Taylor Foster hit a double to right centerfield in the Lady Bombers half of the second inning but was left stranded at second. Massac added three more in the third to push the lead to 5-0. In the third, a controversial slap single gave the Lady Patriots some life. With two outs, the ball appeared to hit the batter on the slap single outside the batter’s box. Coach Terry Amis questioned the no call, but neither official saw the ball hit the batter outside the box so the single was allowed to remain. The Lady Patriots took advantage and got a couple of big hits to add the three runs. The Lady Patriots would put the game away in the fifth for the 11-0 victory. The loss dropped the Lady Bombers to 0-8 on the year.

The Lady Bombers will play host to Marshall County on Tuesday, April 1st. Ballard Memorial will need to get plenty of rest as they will then play four games in one day on Saturday, April 5th at the Crittenden County Round Robin Tournament. They are scheduled to play Carlisle County at 10:00 and Allen County at 12:00 in the early session. After a short rest, they will then play host Crittenden County at 4:00 before wrapping up play at 6:00 against Muhlenberg County.
