Governor Steve Beshear today announced that Livingston County Clerk Sonya Williams has received a grant totaling $26,274 from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) to preserve and manage local government records. KDLA is an agency of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
Thirty-four grants have been awarded for a total of $703,206 from fiscal year 2014 Local Records Grant Program funds.
“During the 28-year history of KDLA’s Local Records Grant Program, a total of more than $20 million has been distributed across Kentucky in grants to all 120 counties,” said Gov. Beshear. “These funds have enabled local agencies to preserve, manage and provide access to local government records, ensuring that citizens will have access to those records in the future. The funds allow agencies to fully utilize new digital technologies to provide unprecedented access to important public records.”
The funds will be used to scan permanent, vital real estate records into the digital imaging system and link to an existing electronic index.
KDLA’s Local Records Program helps to preserve, protect and make available records with continuing archival value and to assist local agencies with records management through grant support, training and direct service.
With four regional administrators covering the state and working with local officials, KDLA ensures professional archival and records management assistance in county and city offices, school districts, and health departments. Grants have supported work in microfilming, preservation, equipment, automated indexing, digital imaging systems and codification of ordinances.
KDLA provides equitable access to quality library and information resources and services, as well as helps public agencies ensure that legislatively mandated documentation of government programs is created, efficiently maintained, and made accessible.
