Livingston County EMS is the first EMS service in Kentucky to implement the newly developed RightDose Pediatric & Adult Drug Dosing Guide. The guides were developed by a Tennessee start‐up company to reduce what caregivers across the emergency medical industry have long recognized and commonly acknowledged– the difficulty of accurate pediatric drug dosing in an emergent situation. EMS director Rick Driskill stated, “The guide eliminates the need to consult multiple resources, gather drug information and then manually perform mathematical equations in an emergency situation.” The newly announced dosing guide, precisely customized to Livingston EMS treatment protocols, pre‐calculates every drug carried on their ambulances and determines the exact amount a child should receive to achieve the proper weight based dose.

“We are very excited about being the first EMS service in Kentucky to deploy this tool” says Driskill. Unlike most adult drug doses, children are dosed according to their weight. To determine an exact pediatric dose, EMS personnel, doctors and nurses need to reference multiple resources in gathering the weight of the patient, drug dose and concentration information and then perform ‘math in the moment’ specific to an individual child. The RightDose guide eliminates that problem.

“Add to those circumstances the stress of an emergency situation and it’s not difficult to understand how easily errors can occur,” states RightDose creator and critical care paramedic Michael Wallace. Wallace, deployed the first version of the dosing guide in his Williamson County, Tennessee EMS department achieving drastic improvements in accuracy system wide and accolades from across the state. Wallace states, “The problem is that every EMS service and hospital emergency room uses different protocols, drugs and concentrations.  Standard reference guides do not provide the exact information required for each specific organization.” The uniqueness of the RightDose Pediatric & Adult Drug Dosing Guide solution is that each guide is fully customized to the organizations specific protocols, medications, dosing regimens, concentrations and special instructions.

RightDose is owned by RDF Holdings LLC, located in Franklin, TN. The company provides a web-based platform that allows EMS organizations, hospitals and clinics to create their own customized dosing guides.  The owners also formed a non-profit organization, The RightDose Foundation, for the specific purpose of assisting healthcare organizations with adopting the dosing guides if they cannot afford them.  Future plans include a national marketing campaign and the development of software apps supported on all the popular mobile platforms.
