Mrs. Mary Charles Harris, 96, of Salem, died February 3, 2014, at Livingston Hospital and Health Services. She was born in Salem in 1917 to Jessie and Hendrick Mitchell and was married to George F. Harris for over 50 years. Mary Charles attended what was then Murray Teachers College in 1936, and taught school for many years at Salem Elementary School. She was always an active member of her church, first at Salem Methodist and then at Salem Baptist, of which she was the oldest member. Mary Charles had a lifelong passion for music and was involved in every facet of her church’s music program – her warm soprano voice often singing solos in the choir, directing music classes for Vacation Bible School, and playing the piano for church services every time she got the chance. Her legacy was to instill a love of music and the arts in everyone in her family. She is survived by two children, George (Linda) of Salem and Kathy of Atlanta, Georgia. She was “Ma” to two granddaughters, Tina Harris Tinsley (Larry) of Salem and Holly Harris Plunkette (Alan) of Calvert City; five great grandchildren, Sarah Tinsley Rowe (Jeremy), Jeremy Tinsley, Blake May, Taylor May and Karson May and one great-great grandson, Jagger Rowe. Funeral services will be 1 P.M. Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Salem Baptist Church, with the Rev’s. John East and Mike Grimes officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 5 to 8 P.M. at Boyd Funeral Directors in Salem. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Mary Charles Harris Honorary Music Scholarship, Murray State University, Office of Development. Condolences may also be left online at boydfuneraldirectors.com

Robert L. Gover, 63, of Smithland died on Thursday February 6, 2014 at Baptist Health Paducah. Mr. Gover was a carpenter. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Gover of Smithland; two sons, Robert Gover Jr. of Smithland, David Ronald Gover of Smithland; and one grandson, Mitchell Gover of Smithland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Gover and Muriel Burron. Funeral will be on Sunday at 3:00pm at Lindsey Funeral Home in Paducah. Friends may call from 1:00pm-3:00pm Sunday at the funeral home. Lindsey Funeral Home of Paducah is in charge of arrangements.

Steve Hackney age 64 of Salem, KY died January 30, 2014 at Livingston Hospital and Healthcare Services. He was a coal miner and Full Gospel preacher. Mr. Hackney is survived by his wife Carol Hackney, Salem, KY; 4 sons, Steve Hackney, Christopher Hackney and Corey Hackney all of Marion, KY and Calep Hackney, Salem, KY; 3 daughters, Donna Faye Hines, Reidland, KY; Tracy Skees, Morganfield, KY and Christina Hackney, Marion, KY; 2 brothers, Danny Wayne Hackney, Grand Rivers, KY and David Reed Hackney, Marion, KY; 5 sisters, Judy Thurman and Wanda Abell both of Marion, KY; Monda Watson, Salem, KY; Martha Stinnett, Dycusburg, KY and Patsy Wyatt, St. Anthony, IN; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Wanda Franklin Hackney and two brothers. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 pm Saturday At Myers Funeral Home, Marion, KY with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Myers Funeral Home from 11 am – 1 pm Saturday, February 1, 2014.

Mr. Jason Ray McDowell, 40, of Henderson, KY, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. Mr. McDowell worked at Pittsburg Glass Works in Evansville, IN , and was a member of Mexico Baptist Church. He is survived by his fiancé’, Kathy McElwain of Henderson, KY; father, James “Butch” McDowell and his wife Linda of Salem, KY; step-father, Jack Elder of Salem, KY; sister, Gina Phelps and her husband David of Fredonia, KY; step-sisters, Amy Byford of Marion, KY and Kelly Grady of Louisville, KY; step-brothers, James Elder of Paducah, KY, and Robert Elder of Graves County, KY; a grandmother, Marilyn Tramel of Evansville, IN; two nephews, Jacob and Evan , and one niece Marley. He was preceded in death by his mother, Debbie Elder. There will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to: Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, 3760 Guion Road, Indianapolis, IN 46222. Arrangements are under the direction of Boyd Funeral Directors in Salem.
