Long time Council Member David Phillips resigns from Wickliffe City Hall
Wickliffe - Wickliffe City Hall Council Member David Phillips resigns after serving approximately twenty years. Over the years he has been on the Council he has seen five mayors in office. Those mayors are Syl Mayolo, Herby Vance, Martha Pennebaker, Chan Case and current Mayor Lynn Hopkins.
There have been several projects that have come to pass during his tenure. Phillips gives credit where credit is due. For example, Under Mayor Mayola and with Collie Sullivan’s help Napa came to Wickliffe. The relocation of the Wickliffe Paper Mill Credit Union came about with the assistance of Mayor Vance. Phillips continued Vance helped with the purchase of the Wickliffe Warehouse. Phillips noted that the Warehouse will be paid off next spring and will make a profit for Wickliffe. Phillips said that Larry Kelley was responsible for the dollar General coming to Wickliffe. Phillips also stated that Larry Kelley was responsible for obtaining the following grants: Fort Jefferson Grant Project, the Fort Jefferson Trail Grant, and the Main St Grant. Phillips said that Council Members Judy Hall, Larry Hammett and Cathy Hurt and City Maintenance Supervisor Guy Johnson have helped get the lights installed. With the help of the Fiscal Court the Wickliffe Ambulance Department station came about. Per Phillips, the City of Wickliffe subsidizes the Ambulance station in Wickliffe. Phillips, “I have been a little part of all that.” referencing all of the above accomplishments for Wickliffe.
After being asked by the Advance Yeoman what accomplishment he has been most proud of, Phillips stated that the Ambulance station and the Fort Jefferson Visitor’s Center and Trail. The Ambulance station in Wickliffe because it helps out a lot for the Wickliffe, Gage, and Blandville areas especially.
Phillips states the reason for his resignation as wanting to spend more time with his family. He has three grown children and three grandkids. One of his daughters, teaches in special education, is moving from the St Louis area to Tennessee. One of his other daughters lives very close by.
When asked about the unexpected resignation of Council Member David Phillips, Mayor Lynn Hopkins replied, “I think David is probably the best Council Member Wickliffe has had and he always made highly intelligent decisions.”
