Lou Lou's Country Farm ships Organic Produce

METROPOLIS, IL - Wally and MaryAnn Mittendorf are in their 2nd year of business at Lou Lou's Country Farm in Metropolis, IL. Lou Lou's is an organic garlic and vegetable farm.

The business is named after Mary Ann's mom, Mary Lou Margherio, who was an amazing cook and inspired her daughters and son-in-laws to love cooking. It was just after her son-in-law Wally retired from Honeywell that he pursued the country farm business, with his wife by his side.

Garlic has always been known for it's health benefits and the Mittendorfs sell a variety of fresh, organically grown garlic at their business. There are very few places in our area that grow and sell this type of quality garlic. The store also ships it out around the area.

Each morning the couple hand picks the vegetables and carries them to the store. There is a long list of freshly grown items to choose from including: zucchini, squash, eggplant, okra, new potatoes, tomatoes, all types of peppers, green beans, beets, greens, herbs and garlic. They also grow Orient Express Cucumbers, which are long skinny burpless cucumbers with minimal seeds.

Other items are sold at Lou Lou's, as well. A cookbook has been put together that features the recipes from MaryAnn's mom, who is well known in the community for her delicious foods. In the winter, Wally enjoys lots of woodworking. He hand-makes chairs and bookshelves and bed swings, like the ones that adorn the front porch of the store. MaryAnn also makes a fresh herbal infused sea salt that is fantastic to use as a seasoning on roasted potatoes, vegetables and meat.

Since the Mittendorfs pick fresh every morning, they donate their vegetables at the end of the day to local ministries. Some of the people that benefit are in women's shelters or children that are fed through a summer food program. MaryAnn shared that many of the women and children never have the opportunity to have these fresh vegetables any other way.
There are more varieties of items that will be available from the Mittendorfs in the future. U-pick blackberries should be ready for next year and in about 2 years there will be U-pick blueberries.
