Octoberfest 2013 to be even bigger and better
Kurt Engelhardt, LL Editor
A few months ago, those of us who are members of the Smithland Area Chamber of Commerce publicly asked for help from the entire community. Our goal was to invite public help and contributions to make the 26th annual Octoberfest grow and expand.
The event is almost here and we have been able to bring back many of the days favorites, but we have also added several new events and activities for Saturday, October 5th in Smithland.
The new events include Tours of the Old Livingston County Courthouse from 10:00 A.M. until 12 noon, conducted by the Livingston County Historical Society.
The car show returns again to Octoberfest and will be held from 10:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. It will be held in the same area as past years in the field in the middle of Charlotte Street.
Inflatable’s will be setup beside the Activities Building of Smithland First Baptist Church from 10:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Potters House volunteers are also sponsoring Children's Activities from 11:00 A.M. until noon in the parking lot of the Early Childhood Development building, next to Smiley's.
The Salem Cloggers will be performing at the riverfront between 11:00 A.M. And 12 noon.
We have invited many more vendors to be a part of the day from 10:00 A.M. Until 4:00 P.M. including plenty serving delicious food.
Returning again this year is the landing of a PHI helicopter on Level Street at 11:00 A.M. with tours provided until approximately 12:30 P.M. (contingent on weather and calls for service received)
The parade will start at 1:00 P.M. and Sheriff Bobby Davidson has asked that are those driving or riding in the parade should lineup at Livingston Central High School Parking Lot by 12:30 P.M.
The Parade will be followed immediately by a brief Pow Wow held at the same location as the Fire Fighter Olympics. The Pow Wow will recognize the nine groups that are being honored this year on the Octoberfest T-shirt. The collector’s item 26th Annual Octoberfest T-shirts are available at Smithland Drug Store and Thompson’s and will also be sold by members of the Smithland Area Chamber at the event.
The Fire Fighter Olympics are returning again this year and it was by far the most popular new addition to Octoberfest. Also happening later in the afternoon the Sugar Creek Pullers will be revving up their engines with fun for everyone and if you are looking for more true Horse Power, the Livingston County Equine Association will be hosting a Fun Horse Show at the Livingston County Fairgrounds starting around 4:00 P.M.
With something for the young and young at heart, and plenty of crafts and food, Octoberfest 2013 is shaping up to be a special time. We look forward to many friends and family members coming home to Smithland for Octoberfest on Saturday, October 5th.
