Prevailing Prayer by Dr. J.T. Parish
Rosalind Goforth, missionary to China and well known prayer warrior, used to speak of “Prevailing Prayer.” When I was a child older Christians used to speak about “Praying through.” The scriptures tell us of the power of “the prayer of faith.” No matter what you call it or how you describe it, if you ever pray for something and you know in your spirit you have the answer even though you have not seen the answer manifest – then you know the power of Prevailing Prayer.
It was in the fall of 1956, I was in Bible College in a New Testament class taught by Dr. T.D. Brown when he taught with powerful emphasis on the terrible, undone condition of the lost soul and the only hope of salvation through Jesus Christ. I left that class with a heavy burden for a brother of mine. I went immediately to my dorm room and fell on my knees in prayer and intercession for his salvation. After about an hour there came such a peace and joy and an inner knowing that his salvation was certain. This was on Friday afternoon.
The next Wednesday afternoon as I went into my New Testament class, another student who was from our area said, “I have a letter from home and I have good news for you – your brother was saved Sunday night!” I told him I knew that last Friday afternoon. He asked how I could have known it on Friday when it didn’t happen until Sunday. I didn’t know enough about the prayer of faith to explain it to him, so in the vernacular of the old saints of my acquaintance I told him I had “Prayed it through.”
Now what would happen if you and I would ask the Lord to lay souls on our hearts and pray until we pray through for them?
