Real Happiness by Dr. J.T. Parish
Howard Hughes, one of the wealthiest men of his day said, “I am the most miserable man on earth.” Evidently wealth is not a guarantee of happiness. A preacher held for years in a communist prison said the joy of the Lord filled him every afternoon and he danced before the Lord to the amazement of his captors. Happiness cannot be prevented by adverse circumstances.
When our happiness is rooted in the joy of the Lord because of our relationship and fellowship with Jesus, then our circumstances are irrelevant. That is the real happiness. Yet many are deceived by our pleasure crazed culture and try to find happiness in entertainment, sport, illicit relationships, alcohol, and other drugs, money, position, and power. The result is a temporary happiness dependent on the circumstance of the moment.
Wise king Solomon told us all about it. He tried wine, women, and song and called it “Vanity of Vanities.” Finally he concluded that to “Fear God and keep His commandments is the whole duty of man.” Real happiness lasts. It is dependent only on one thing – our relationship with God. Wouldn’t it make sense for us to read the book of Ecclesiastes and learn from Solomon? Why should we make all the mistakes he made? If we are teachable we can take his word for it, and go straight to the Lord and enjoy real happiness for time and eternity.
