Do you enjoy your religion or do you endure it?

By Teresa A. LeNeave

I once heard someone ask the question, "Do you enjoy your religion or do you endure it?" I had to spend some time answering that myself and then I thought of so many Christians who seem to have little or no joy. You probably know people who once served God faithfully and then gave up.

Why is that? Why would anyone choose to leave God out of their life?

I'm no expert, but I have a couple ideas. The first being that some Christian's get bored with church. They try it, but they soon lose interest. We live in a fast-paced microwave world. We like entertainment; lots of music; lots of sports and lots of laughs. All those things are good, but I think it causes many people to get bored with church. When there is no excitement in church, or their life, they will go looking for it elsewhere.

That doesn't mean they don't love God, or even believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It just means that church (the act of going to church week after week) just didn't hold their interest. When they found something more interesting, it drew them away. The trouble with being drawn away is that it leaves one in a very vulnerable and dangerous spot.

The second thing that I've noticed is that Satan tries to convince us that being a Christ-follower, a Christian, is difficult and that being obedient to God is near impossible. Actually, if you believe scripture you would know that is just another of Satan's lies because Jesus said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light (Matthew 11: 28-30).

Who of us wouldn't enjoy a little rest? That is why I say, it's a lie of Satan to convince people that being a Christian is difficult. Actually, it is not difficult. Serving God is easy if your heart is in it. Serving God is like anything else in life, if your heart is not in it, you will not enjoy it. If your heart is not in it, you may question whether or not you've really given your heart to God.

To prevent being drawn into sin, we have to keep our focus on the Father (God). We can't do that consistently unless we have had a heart change.

So my question is this: Do you enjoy your religion or do you endure it? If you have had thoughts of backing up; if you have started missing too much church; and if you have excuses for not staying involved in your Christianity community, please don't give up. Hold on tight to the only one who can deliver, restore and heal you.

If church is not interesting, make it interesting. If Satan is wearing you down just remember "the Lord is the strength of your life" (Psalm 27:1). There is nothing too hard for God.
