If You Were the Only One

If you were the only one God sent to your neighbor, would he make it to heaven? If you were the only one God sent to your child, would he/she know God as their Savior? Would they make it to heaven? I hope you said, “I hope so”, but the real truth is that no matter what you say to anyone, salvation comes from God and God alone. We can try to win the world (and we should try), but unless the Spirit of God draws a person they won’t want God or any part of Him.

The Bible tells us that one plants, another waters, but God gives the increase. Our job then, is to plant and to water. As a 10-year-old kid, when I gave my heart to Jesus I never thought about planting or watering. I just thought about avoiding hell. Well, that’s certainly a good reason, but not good enough to keep us walking closely to God. Many times I’ve failed and many times I’ve been shocked at the mercy of God, but one thing I know and that’s that Jesus died to set us free.

What will keep us walking closely to God is realizing how lost and hopeless we are without His guiding hand. If He ever took His hand of mercy from us there would be no hope for survival on this earth. Through many trials and temptations, I’ve learned that His grace is sufficient. Experience has taught me that I need God in my life. I need Him “when everything is bright and cheery” as much as I need Him in the tough times.

I recently watched the old movie Ben-Hur, and was reminded of the great struggle Jesus went through just to give us freedom from the bondage that sin places on a person’s life. What a pleasure to know that God loves you and His mercy “endures forever”.

Embrace that thought. His mercy endures not just ever-so-often or if He decides you’ve been good enough. No. His mercy endures forever and if you just turn back to Him and invite Him to participate in your life you will see evidence of mercy all around you.

I remember a place in the Bible that says “Mercy supersedes judgment”. To some people God may be just the man who created what we call the universe, but to the person who knows Him as Father, He is your best friend, your strength, your hiding place and your healer. He’s everything you need.

Right in the midst of your struggle, He shows up “just for you”.
