When the flames are hot and the Jordan swells

By Teresa LeNeave

Success is not a $79.99 seminar. It is not a one-hour sermon or 100 hours of sermons. It's not a 12-step program or a 7-steps to success book.

Although, all those things have value and they will certainly help, permanent transforming success, comes only from the Word of God and following Jesus with a whole heart. It comes from a made-up mind. A mind set to follow God in spite of the fire.

As you know, there are a lot of successes in life. There are a lot of talented people who do amazing things, but the successful permanent transformation that takes one from "just living" to "really living" is a process that begins with a born-again experience (which is a spiritual transformation that takes place when you fully accept Jesus, by faith, as your redeemer and forgiver). Really living comes from letting the process work in you. It comes by learning to be a disciple through the Word. When you get in the Word, the Word gets in you and that is what transforms a man or woman. It's what brings lasting success.

Sure, you're going to stumble along the way. You'll trip and make mistakes, but it won't defeat you as long as you get back up, get back in the saddle and continue to ride forward. When you see someone walking in victory, you're seeing someone who, over time, has let God work some things out in their life. They've fallen a few times. Probably lots of times. They've had many opportunities for God, and The Word, to mold them. They've fallen, but they continued to get back up and get back on track.

Spiritual success is not something a person gets by just wishing it. In your heart you want to succeed, but wishing will never get you where you want to be. It's a decision you make to move forward in spite of many things that seem to be getting in the way. The Bible says to lay aside, get out of your face, the things that so easily beset you (Hebrews 12:1). Sometimes you have to push the delete button so you can move forward.

Humanity has a big problem. It's called familiarity. We embrace what we know: what is comfortable and what is familiar, even though it's killing us. We don't like change. It's uncomfortable. Even though it's killing us, we have more faith in what's familiar and would rather stay there rather than step into unknown territory. Don't be afraid. God is only going to do you good. He is your friend. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness or shadow of turning" (James 1:17).

What is God trying to do in your life right now? You'll find God's Word works in your life when you face a Jordan River ... a place you have to cross to get to something better. It works in the lion's den when hungry lions want to take you out, but they can't because God has given them lock-jaw. It works when the flames are hot enough to burn the ones throwing you in the flames, but it can't burn you because the fourth man in the fire is protecting you. Don't be afraid of the unfamiliar. You're covered by the blood. Spiritual success comes from a love relationship with the Word. The Word has the power to heal and restore. It's what will bring success.
