Yes! No! Maybe. South Livingston Elementary School students in Mrs. Stacey Turner’s 5th grade class were treated to a book tasting last week to sample works from a variety of genres.  Turner decorated tables in the library media center with bright tablecloths and grouped several books from the same genre on each table.  Students then spent 3-4 minutes with a book to read the back cover and the first few pages to try to determine why it was classified as a particular genre and if they would be interested in reading it.  Next students took notes on the books they experienced and listed why they would or would not like to read the book in the future.  Students then rotated to a table with a different genre and repeated the process of sampling books.  Students in Turner’s class are required to read 32 books this year.  This activity is one of many Turner uses to get students excited about reading and help them say yes, no or maybe when deciding what book to read.
