Three Advance To State

By Tim Taylor

The Ballard County Middle School Academic Team had three young men qualify for the Governor's Cup State competition on Louisville on March 14th. Parker Feezor, Ryan Rehkemper, and Shelby Taylor finished in the top five in their respective written assessment competitions at the First Region Middle School Governor's Cup at Paducah Middle School on Saturday, January 31st to qualify for state. Eighth grader Feezor was the highest finishing Bomber as he placed third in Science. Also qualifying in Science was Rehkemper who tied for fifth. The seventh grader Rehkemper also tied for fifth in Social Studies to be the only Bomber to qualify for state in two events. Seventh grader Taylor was the third member of the middle school academic team to qualify for state as he finished fifth in Arts and Humanities. The Middle School Quick Recall team finished in fourth place in the regional competition but failed to qualify for state. They began play with a convincing 22-7 victory over North Marshall Middle School. They followed that up with a tough matchup with Calloway Middle. The Ballard Middle School team jumped out to an 8-1 lead before Calloway would call a time out. The Lakers would claw back into the match and still trailed Ballard 15-14 at the half. Calloway would gain the advantage and force Ballard into the loser's bracket as the Lakers claimed the 31-26 win. Ballard then met Murray Middle and the Bombers advanced to the Final Four with a 26-18 win. In the Final Four, Ballard matched up with South Marshall and led 12-8 at the break. Ballard was not able to maintain the momentum as they were eliminated from the tournament, losing to South Marshall 20-17. South Marshall would defeat Paducah Middle in the next round to advance to the finals where they lost to Calloway County's Lakers in the finals. Ballard's losses were to the two teams that made the final round and that advanced to the state tournament. Ballard County's academic team finished in eighth place out of 18 teams that competed.
