PADUCAH, Ky. (Sept 16, 2020) ) -- A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans an overnight eastbound work zone traffic shift along a 2-mile section of Interstate 24 at Paducah starting at approximately 9 p.m., CDT, on Thursday, September 17, 2020.

This eastbound work zone runs along I-24 from mile point 2.8 near the KY 305 Paducah Exit 3 interchange extending eastward through the U.S. 60 Exit 4 interchange to mile point 4.8 near the Perkins Creek Bridge.

Eastbound traffic in this work zone is currently traveling in the right-hand or driving lane to allow the contractor to work on bridge and overpass decks along the closed passing lane. Starting at about 9 p.m., Thursday, the contractor plans to begin moving barrier walls and other traffic control equipment to transition traffic to the right-hand or passing lane during the overnight hours.

Motorists should use extra caution and be alert for flaggers and other personnel involved in the transition to the new traffic configuration. The transition should be completed by about 4:30 a.m., CDT, Friday.

Eastbound commuters who regularly travel this section of I-24 should be prepared to encounter the new traffic configuration on the morning commute Friday. Truckers should be aware that this 2-mile long work zone will continue to include a 13 ft. maximum load width restriction.

The work zone is along a section of I-24 that gets a lot of local traffic between Exit 7 and Exit 3 at Paducah. Motorists in the immediate Paducah area can help reduce traffic congestion on I-24 in this work zone by taking an alternate route.

This extended work zone is to allow bridge deck overlay and maintenance work on the Perkins Creek Bridge, the U.S. 60 Exit 4 Overpass, and the KY 305 Exit 3 Overpass.

This work zone has a 55 mile per hour speed limit with an enhanced enforcement presence and double fines for citations.

Harper Construction, LLC, is the prime contractor on this $1.4 million bridge deck replacement and maintenance project. The target completion dateis October 15, 2020.
