Dr. James Boyce Carlin, 81, of Volusia, Fl, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013 at 4:30 pm at Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, Fl. He was the youngest child of the late Dr. L.W. Carlin and Flora Lee Newton Carlin. He was born of his earthly parents in Paducah, Ky on June 19, 1932. He was born of his heavenly Father on Friday evening, May 3, 1945, during a revival at Bellview Baptist Church, Paducah, KY. He was married to Hellon L. Upchurch in Macon, MS on June 28, 1968. He is survived by his wife and their daughter, Rhonda Hope Carlin Lach, of Oviedo, FL, two grandsons and one granddaughter: David Grant Lach, Bryce Chandler Lach and Emmie Carlin Lach and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother and two sisters, Martha Pauline Carlin, Mary Ruth Carlin Courtney; two brothers, Loyce Paul Carlin and Dr. Charles B. Carlin. At the time of his death, he was a member of Volusia County Baptist Church in Orange City, FL. Dr. Carlin was a deacon and served his Lord in various capacities as Sunday School teacher, music director and church clerk. Upon graduating from Murray State University, he began his professional career as an educator. His career as an educator and university professor spanned a period of forty two years. His teaching career began as a teacher at Hendron Elementary School in McCracken County, KY. He served five universities as a professor and numerous other universities as a guest professor. His longest tenure was with Murray State University, Murray, KY where he served for twenty two years. In 1988, his students honored him by establishing the James B. Carlin Education Scholarship. He authored several books and publications. Even in his retirement, he authored such books and publications as: “Identifying The Lord’s King Of Churches-A Biblical History” (1st and 2nd editions); “Bible Revelations Of Jesus The Christ-The Real Jesus”; “Will Your Child Know”; “There Was Never A Book Like The Bible”, “Eternally Important Questions For You To Consider On Your Road To Eternity”. His most recent book was “The Holy Godhead-That Triune Name-The Holy Trinity”. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: The Volusia County Baptist Church Mission Fund, 261 S. Steve Swinford, 59, of Paducah, passed away at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Lourdes Hospital. Mr. Swinford was of the Baptist faith, owner of Swinford Trucking, a board member of the McCracken Co. Animal Shelter and a member of Sharpe Masonic Lodge #737. Steve is survived by his wife, Dalenia Gail Davis Swinford; two sons, Stephen Wayne Swinford II of Paducah and Timothy Dean Swinford and wife Crystal of Barlow; three grandchildren, Stephen Wayne Swinford III, Colson Dean Swinford and Conner Monroe Swinford; his mother, Maureen Burgess Swinford of Paducah; a sister, Linda Gail Oreskovich of Benton; two brothers, Chris Swinford of Paducah and Pete Oreskovich of West Paducah; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Wayne Swinford. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home with Rev. Robert P. Lyday, 48, of Paducah, KY died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at his residence. He was of Baptist faith, a veteran of U.S. Navy and employed by Healthcare Services in Mayfield, KY. Survivors include father, Benjamin Lyday, Paducah, KY; mother and step-father, Shirley Allen Faulkner & Gary Faulkner of Metropolis, IL; one sister, Kathy Walters, Metropolis, IL and one niece, Taylor Walters, Metropolis, IL. Services were held Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Larry Rudesill officiating.
Joy V Buchanan, 92, of Paducah, KY, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at her residence. She was a retired nurse with Lourdes Hospital and a member of Lone Oak United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Wallace E. “Wally” Buchanan, of Paducah, KY; her sons, Steve Buchanan, of Carmel, IN, Gary Buchanan, of Raleigh, NC and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis M. Latham and Nora Vaughn Latham; one sister; three half-sisters and one half-brother. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Edna M. “Swanee” Atkins, 92, of Paducah, formerly of Clarksville, IN, died Monday, December 30, 2013 at 4pm at Baptist Health-Paducah. Edna was born on February 28, 1921 in Bicknell, IN to the late Lee Williams and Ann Cole Williams Turner Adamson. She was a longtime beautician and an instructor at New Albany Beauty School. After moving to Paducah, Edna was an active member of Broadway United Methodist Church, a longtime member of McCracken County Homemaker’s Association and Clara Henrich Chapter 424 of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gene Atkins; two daughters, Sandra Drewery and husband Pat of Eaton, OH and Bonnie Atkins of New Albany, IN; a son, Thomas Atkins and wife Ruth of Terre Haute, IN; two sisters, Mary Swann and husband Sam and Helen Cummings and husband Harry all of Leavenworth, IN; brother, John Adamson of Marengo, IN; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her sisters, Rose Parr, Georgie Turner, Frances Kane, and Ellen Roberson; and a brother, David Adamson. Memorial services were Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Broadway United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Beal officiating. Rev. David Bennett Brasher, age 75, of Benton, KY, died Friday, December 27, 2013 @ 12:45 pm, at Baptist Health in Paducah, KY. Bro. Brasher pastored several Western Kentucky churches in his 55 years of ministry. He also conducted revivals throughout the area. He was faithful in mission work throughout Ohio and Idaho. He was a graduate of Livingston Central High School and obtained a Bible Studies Degree from Mid-Continent Baptist Bible College. Dr. Howard Winston Mathis, 71, of Salem, KY, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013, at his home. Dr. Mathis was a graduate of North Marshall County High School; Murray State University, where he received his bachelor of arts degree; and the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, TN, were he received his doctorate degree. Dr. Mathis was a lifetime member of the Kentucky Optometric Association; the American Optometric Association; Marion Lions Club; and was on the board of directors of the Crittenden and Livingston County Health Departments. Dr. Mathis was a member of Salem Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marcella Mathis of Salem, KY, one step-daughter, Felicia Belcher, and her husband Rudy of Henderson, KY; one sister, Wanda Sue Melton of Salem, KY; two grandchildren, Megan Belcher of Henderson, KY, and Kris (John) Belcher of Evansville, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Winston Mathis, Sr. and Ada Rountree Mathis.
