E. Orlen Bruce, 84 of Paducah passed away at Saturday, May 3, 2014, at his home ending his brave struggle with heart disease and strokes. He was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Paducah where he sang in his beloved choir. Mr. Bruce worked at Petter Business Systems for thirty-five years until retirement in 1965. He was a sales supervisor of Industrial supplies. When he was nineteen years old he was a member of the Hawkins Quartet and later a member of the Hamilton Brothers. Mr. Bruce served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Paducah Night Lions. He was also a member of the Plain City Lodge No. 449 as a Master Mason. Mr. Bruce could talk to anyone. He always had a warm smile, quick wit, and ready to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed carving horses, woodworking, working in his vegetable garden and watching Kentucky Basketball. Mr. Bruce will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of thirty-four years Sylvia Billings Bruce. He was a loving father to his four daughters, Debby Hunt and husband Ken of Georgia, Dianne Whitaker and husband John of Lexington, Shellie Weitlauf of Paducah, and Anna-Laura Bynum and husband Tom of Calvert City; Five step children, Robyn Ball of Texas, LaVonne Digby of Michigan, Curtis Ball of Arizona, Chris Ball and wife Deb of Michigan, Brian Lewis Ball of Colorado; one brother, Don and wife Nancy Bruce of Paducah; one sister, Imogene Clark of Paducah; five grandchildren, David Riggs and wife Jai, Meredith Pritchett, Ashley Snyder and husband Brett, Philip Digby and Michael Bynum; three great grandchildren, Jackson Snyder, Chris and Cameron Pritchett and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ethel Bruce; two sisters, Zora Lou Marquess and Gracie Bruce. A celebration of life will take place 1:00pm Wednesday May 7, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Paducah with Rev. Tommy Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Mary Catherine Wurth, 87 of Paducah, passed away at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Paducah. She was a Reidland High School graduate, and retired from Lourdes Hospital Housekeeping Department after more than 20 years of service. After retirement she was able to share her love of gardening while working at Wurth Farm’s, where she was affectionately known as “Aunt Mary.” Ms. Wurth is survived by her son, Michael William Wurth, and wife Regina, of Paducah; two sisters, Dorris Scheer of Paducah and Ethel O’Neill and husband, Walter, of Milburn, KY; four brothers, James Kortz of Paducah, Charles Kortz, and wife, Bonnie, of Paducah, Earl Kortz of Paducah, and Richard Kortz, and wife, Florence, of Owensboro, KY; two grandchildren, Staci Baker and Kristi Wurth, both of Paducah; one great-grandchild, Austin Baker of Paducah, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, of almost 50 years, Andrew Joseph Wurth; and her parents, Frank William Kortz and Mary Luvada (Wurth) Kortz; and one sister, Mildred Kortz. The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Tom Buckman officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John Cemetery. Arrie Lee Pirtle, 100, passed away at 6:50 pm Thursday May, 1, 2014 at Parkview Nursing and Rehab. Mrs. Pirtle was of the Church of Christ faith, a lifetime member of Westend Home Makers Club, a lifetime member of the Clara Hendricks chapter of the Eastern Star and a member of the Paducah Lioness Club. She is survived by her two daughters, Vicki Knight and husband John of West Paducah, Linda England and husband James of West Paducah; one son, Robert F. Pirtle and wife Marilyn of Paducah; six grandchildren, Robert F. Pirtle Jr. of Indianapolis IN, Jamie England and wife Jackie of West Paducah, Lindsay Leigh England of Birmingham AL, William John Knight of Houston TX, Lee Anne Smotherman of Paducah, Kathy Hamilton of Paducah; three great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Stanley Pirtle, and one daughter Nancy Nichols, and one infant son Charles Stanley Pirtle. Her parents were Charles M. Thomas Calhoun Jr., 73 of Paducah, passed away at 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Baptist Health in Paducah. Mr. Calhoun worked at Hoe Supply for 36 years where he drove a truck, and did warehouse labor. He later, worked for Ideal Reel Co. where he tied wire. Mr. Calhoun restored antique cars in his spare time, and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Clara Alexander Calhoun, of Paducah; two daughters, Melissa Harsha and Opel Snyder, both of Paducah; one son, Lewis Calhoun, of Paducah, one brother, Perry Calhoun; four grandchildren, Drama Snyder, Joshlyn Harsha, David Cayse, and Thomas Harsha, all of Paducah, and two nieces. Mr. Calhoun is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Thomas Calhoun and Lunie Davis Calhoun; one sister, Sarah Wyatt; and one brother, James Calhoun. She graduated from Augusta Tilghman High School in 1942 and was employed 30 years by the Kentucky State Department of Economic Security as an Employment Interviewer. She was a member of the International Assoc. of Personnel in Employment Security; the Ten-Ure Club of Kentucky and the Kentucky Public Retirees. She was a Kentucky Colonel and a Duchess of Paducah. Surviving is one son, William R. Rouse and his wife Alice of Murray, KY; three brothers, Ervin Goodman and James Goodman of Paducah, KY and David Goodman of Carmichael, CA; four grandchildren, Michele Jenkins of Greenfield, N.C., Heather Anne Calloway of Jacksonville, FL, Justin R. Rouse of Paducah, KY and Jason E. Rouse of Nashville, TN; two great grandchildren, Lauren Jenkins and Nathan Jenkins of Greenfield, N.C. and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elmore S. “Stormy” Rouse; daughter Sondra L. Shearouse; sister, Mary Carpenter and two brothers, Dennis and Ronald Goodman.
