Who doesn't love a good sandwich?

The sandwich might be the perfect food. It's portable, simple or as elaborate as you want it to be.

Did you know the sandwich originated from England in 1762 by John Montagu? During a particularly long binge, he asked the cook to bring him something he could eat without getting up from his seat, and the sandwich was born.

Some of the most famous sandwich origins that I thought were interesting are the Po' Boy, Sloppy Joe and the Reuben.

The Po' Boy came from New Orleans. This iconic sandwich came around the Great Depression during a streetcar worker strike. Two brothers, once were streetcar operators themselves, owned a sandwich shop close by, and promised to feed any down on his luck striking worker for free. When a striker walked into their shop, the clerks would yell, "Here comes another po' boy!" and the name stuck.

The next sandwich is not loved by everyone, but became a school lunch staple, the Sloppy Joe. It came around the same time as the Po' Boy by the creation of a short order cook named - you guessed it - Joe. Sloppy Joes are also known as "loose meat sandwiches" and was sold in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s. The sandwich became popular as a way for families to stretch their food further. Inexpensive cuts of meat combined with a tomato sauce and fillers, such as onion, could feed a lot of people, especially when you served it on bread for a complete meal.

The Reuben is another well known sandwich I have heard that a good Reuben sandwich is a messy, mile-high salty corned beef, tangy sauerkraut, melted Swiss cheese, and a thousand island dressing pressed between two slices of rye bread. It was first concocted in the 1920s when Reuben Kulakofsky asked for a sandwich made of corned beef and pastrami at his weekly poker game at the Blackstone Hotel.

Sandwiches have come along way since 1762. I asked some local restaurants what their top selling sandwich was. I was unable to get with all restaurants, but here are a few local restaurants responses.

Lisa Turner at The River City Café in Wickliffe said the Club Sandwich was very popular for them. Kentucky Hillbilly in Wickliffe says the Philly Cheesesteak made with their own BBQ brisket, peppers, onions and topped with their white queso cheese they use on their nachos is their absolute best seller. Helen Karadimas from Bluegrass Restaurant in LaCenter said they have several popular sandwiches, but the Philly Steak, Gyro and Chicken Club are top sellers. Mimmie's Pizza in LaCenter is known for their Stromboli sandwich. Amber Hayes with The Farm in LaCenter said their top sellers for sandwiches are the Reuben and Ribeye steak sandwich. The Burger Bar in Kevil said their best selling sandwich is a cheeseburger as well as the sandwich they created, which is the Blazing Ballard Burger. It is a cheeseburger with jalapeños, pulled pork, onion rings and a spicy barbecue sauce. Chris Fristoe from Fristoe's Restaurant in Hickory said cheeseburgers are their best selling sandwich. A & B BBQ in Mayfield said for sure the BBQ Brisket Sandwich. My Husband, Jason, always loves when they have the Spicy BBQ Bacon Burger. It is a 1/2# hamburger patty topped with BBQ, cheese, spicy bacon, jalapeños and is only sold on Saturdays. Kate Prince with Prince Pit BBQ in Barlow and Bardwell said, "Our best selling and most popular is just a regular BBQ pork sandwich. We haven't created any of our own, but it's interesting sometimes to see what people ask for us to put on their sandwiches. Some of the different condiments asked for on a regular BBQ sandwich include: BBQ sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, onion, cheese, cole slaw, and pickles." Dow's Sub is one of the top sellers at Maimee's in Cunningham. It is named after their owner's son, Dowlas. It is thinly sliced garlic chicken, turkey pastrami, and provolone cheese toasted on a delicious hoagie bun added with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, banana peppers, and red onion. Then to top it all off, they add Italian dressing. The Keg Bar & Grill in Fulton said their classic burger and the small BBQ sandwich are the best selling sandwiches for them. They said the quality of meat they use makes their sandwiches stand out from any other sandwich. Pizza by the Pound in Paducah has more than just pizza, Mandy O'Brien said, "We have a couple, but I guess if I had to pick just one it would be the Stromboli. It seems to be the go-to sandwich when customers can't decide. It is made on our homemade bread with marinara, beef, Italian sausage, pepperoni, onion, bell peppers and topped with cheese and baked. Backwoods BBQ in Paducah says they have so many that is their top sellers, but they narrowed it down to the smoked pulled chicken sandwich. It's their fresh hickory smoked chicken hand pulled off the bone and put on a buns topped with homemade BBQ sauce, add Mayo, cheese, jalapeños and their NEW sweet fire sauce for a kick to make it our Fireball Chicken Sandwich.

Sandwiches are delicious to eat and quick to make. Now sandwiches are made out of any ingredient possible and different types of shells, like lettuce wraps. I think people like them because they can be almost anything you want and they're portable. I encourage you to try something creative and build upon it. Maybe you will be a creator of another iconic sandwich.
