WEST PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- Barkley Regional Airport will receive $3.1 million in federal funding to modernize its runway lighting systems, a critical upgrade aimed at improving airfield safety, reliability, and night operations.

The funding is included in the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation-Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill, which recently passed the U.S. Senate and is awaiting the President's signature. U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, helped secure the investment as part of a broader effort to strengthen transportation infrastructure across Kentucky.

Airport officials say the project will replace aging runway lighting systems and cabling, enhancing safety during night and low-visibility conditions while supporting reliable air service for the Purchase Region and surrounding communities.

"We are incredibly grateful for this federal investment and for the leadership that made it possible," said Dennis Rouleau, executive director of the Barkley Regional Airport Authority. "Runway lighting is fundamental for safe, reliable airfield operations, especially during night and low-visibility conditions. This project will replace aging lighting systems and cabling, improve operational reliability, and enhance safety for our crews, passengers, and pilots."

Rouleau added that the improvements will help ensure Barkley Regional Airport remains a dependable transportation asset and a vital gateway for business, tourism, and economic development throughout the region.

The funding for Barkley Regional Airport is part of more than $36 million allocated to airports statewide, supporting both commercial and regional aviation infrastructure across Kentucky. Airport officials say the runway lighting project aligns with ongoing modernization efforts as Barkley Regional Airport prepares for expanded air service and continued regional growth.
