Two critically injured after "sparkler bomb" explosion in western Kentucky

PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- UPDATE: June 17, 10:02 a.m. -- The McCracken County Sheriff's Office provided an update to an explosion which took place by a church in the Paducah area on Monday. Authorities said detectives determined this was not a workplace related incident. However, authorities said the explosion was not intentional and was caused by fireworks. Investigators said they believe one of the workers made a "sparkler bomb" and the other coworker unwittingly cut the "sparkler bomb" which caused the explosion. The sheriff's office said workers with A&K Construction provided in helping with first aid. ORIGINAL: June 16, 4:15 p.m. -- According to the McCracken County Sheriff's Office, they are investigating a report of an explosion which resulted in two construction workers injured on Monday. This happened at the Lone Oak First Baptist Church in the Paducah area in the early afternoon hours on June 16. The sheriff's office said there were reports from people who heard the explosion miles away.The Lone Oak First Baptist Church stated there was an "accident inside of one of the barns on our construction site." Both construction workers were reported to be critically injured. Both were taken to local hospitals, with one then taken to an out-of-state hospital. Authorities said the construction crew were working in a building away from the church. Officials tells us they do not have any reason to believe the incident was a result of something intentional or nefarious. Assisting the McCracken County Sheriff's Office in the investigation is the Paducah Police Department, along with other local agencies.
