FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) - With Black Friday and Cyber Monday on the horizon, the Administrative Office of the Courts(AOC) and the Kentucky Retail Federation (KRF) are teaming up to warn shoppers about gift card and other scams.

These scams frequently involve false claims that an arrest warrant can be cleared with prepaid cards.

"Criminals often pressure people to buy gift cards to resolve a supposed arrest warrant," said Darren Allen, manager of the Division of Court Security at the AOC. "These schemes typically begin with a call, text or email that claims immediate payment is required to avoid arrest or legal action."

He noted, "Scammers try to create panic and push people into quick decisions. Courts and law enforcement will never ask anyone to pay fines or fees with gift cards. If you get a message like that, stop and check before acting."

The AOC's scam alert webpage explains common fraud schemes tied to courts and law enforcement. Some schemes also use fake delivery notifications or fraudulent links sent during periods of increased online shopping activity. The webpage includes a short video on tactics used to obtain money and personal information, county-specific jury service information, a fraud fact sheet and instructions on reporting suspicious activity. Kentuckians can access the webpage at https://kcoj.info/CourtsScamAlert.

"The holiday shopping season is busy not just for consumers and retailers, but also for scammers who especially like to target gift cards," said Tod Griffin, president of the KRF. "Kentucky retailers are currently taking critical extra steps to safeguard the integrity of the shopping experience for consumers. Shoppers may find extra security precautions on gift cards, such as protective packaging and enhanced purchase processes. Just know these steps are in place to ensure that all the recipients on your holiday list are able to enjoy those special gift cards they receive."

According to data cited by the KRF, gift cards remain one of the most common holiday purchases and shoppers are expected to spend an average of $171 per person on them. The federation also reports that 43 percent of shoppers plan to buy gift cards this year, reflecting their broad popularity during the holidays.
