KEVIL, Ky. (KT) - Four people have now been confirmed to have died due to the heavy rain in Kentucky that led to flooding over the last several days, the latest casualties being a 27-year-old man from McCracken County and a 65-year-old man from Trigg County.
Kentucky State Police at the Mayfield Post said Lee Chandler of LaCenter had been last seen Sunday afternoon in the 8000 block of Elliot Road in Kevil when he was swept away by floodwaters as he attempted to retrieve his boat. The boat was quickly recovered on Sunday; however, Chandler's whereabouts remained unknown, until his body was discovered on Monday.
Law enforcement and other emergency services utilized a variety of resources in the search for Chandler, including boats and drones.
In addition to the Kentucky State Police, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, McCracken County Sheriff's Department, McCracken County Rescue Squad, Ballard County Sheriff's Department, County Rescue Squad, Marshall County Rescue Squad, and Trigg County Rescue Squad all assisted in the recovery of Chandler's body.
The Trigg County coroner's office identified the other latest victim as David Duncan.
The two other deaths due to the flooding were nine-year-old Gabriel Andrews of Frankfort, who was swept away by floodwaters while walking to his school bus stop Friday morning, and a Nelson County woman, whose name has not been released, who was found dead in her car on Saturday, which was discovered in the floodwaters.
A flood warning remains in effect for much of central and western Kentucky until noon on Tuesday, while many rivers, including Ohio and Kentucky, are under flood warnings until later in the week.
The National Weather Service has also issued a freeze warning for the overnight period into late Tuesday morning for most of the state. That means water that is across roads may freeze overnight, creating very hazardous driving conditions.
