Louisville names 3 returnees as captains

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) - Returning University of Louisville basketball players Sydney Curry, El Ellis and Jae'Lyn Withers have been named UofL's team captains for the 2022-23 season, the first time as a captain for each of the trio.

The 6-foot-8 senior forward Curry, a 6-8 senior forward, averaged 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in his first year at UofL in 2021-22. He came on strong late, averaging 17.6 points and nine rebounds over his last four games while shooting 64.4 percent.

Ellis, a 6-3 senior guard, is Louisville's leading returning scorer at 8.7 points per game, to go along with 51 total assists and 41 made 3-pointers. Ellis started six of the last nine games last year and was a double-figure scorer in seven of the last 12 games, including a career-high 25 against North Carolina. He averaged 11.3 points per game over the last 12 contests.

Withers, a 6-9 redshirt junior forward, overcame injuries last season to start 15 games. He was second on the team in rebounding (4.6 rpg) and third in steals (20 total), while averaging 5.8 points.

Fans will get their first chance to see the 2022-23 edition of the Cards at their annual Red-White scrimmage on Oct. 23 in the KFC Yum! Center.
